Announcing SOC 2 Type II Certification: Reinforcing our Commitment to Security

May 7, 2024

As a digital solution for auto repair shops, Tekmetric understands the importance of maintaining the highest security possible.  Not only do we want to ensure that our customers receive full transparency anytime their vehicle is in the shop, but we also understand the value of keeping customer data protected and secure.

Last year, Tekmetric took our data security measures to the next level by achieving SOC 2 Type I compliance – and this year, we’ve stepped up our game to achieve SOC 2 Type II compliance. By earning both SOC 2 Type I and Type II compliances, we aim to continue promoting trust, transparency and security throughout the industry.

As a company that prioritizes innovative, reliable solutions, Tekmetric is proud to be among the first auto repair shop management solutions to receive SOC 2 Type I and II compliance. These certifications are awarded in accordance with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) standards for SOC for Service Organizations (SSAE 18).

What is SOC 2 Type II Compliance?

SOC 2 Type II compliance is awarded when a system meets five principles:

  • Security. SOC 2 Type II protects the system against any unauthorized access, ensuring customer data is only accessible to approved parties.
  • Availability. This allows for stronger capabilities in monitoring performance, disaster recovery and handling security incidents. For example, Tekmetric has many data centers across the country to promote better disaster recovery. If one center goes down, the others have backup data available, so shops can access their information without missing a beat.
  • Processing Integrity. This quality revolves around quality assurance and process monitoring. The information you process through the system must be complete, authorized and accurate.
  • Confidentiality. We recognize that our partner shops obtain many types of personal data from vehicle owners. SOC 2 Type II compliance assures you and the vehicle owners that visit your shop that their data remains confidential within your system.
  • Privacy. Above all, we want to make sure data is specifically used for its intended purpose. People value dependability, and this certification helps keep your shop’s data private according to the standards specified by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).

What is SOC 2 Type I vs. Type II?

  • Type I: Describes how security and compliance controls are “designed” based on a specific point in time. For example as of March 31st, the organization conducts background checks and has job descriptions for roles and responsibilities.
  • Type II: Describes the “design and operating effectiveness over a period of time (audit period),” typically 6-12 months. This assessment shows the SOC 2 control implementation and operating effectiveness over that time period.

What Does It Mean for My Shop?

Security is a big concern in the modern auto repair industry – and with good reason. No one wants their data available to the whole world. With SOC 2 Type II compliance, we are able to keep any information that you put into Tekmetric secure, from your shop’s data to your customers’ information.

This happens without you needing to lift a finger. No need to track the last time you backed up your data or review who has access to your system! You can also assure your customers that their sensitive information is safe when they give it to you. They – and you – can sleep easier knowing the data is protected, and your shop management system meets top-tier industry standards to keep it that way.

Protecting Data in the Long-Term

At Tekmetric, we’re committed to driving positive change in the auto repair industry by promoting accessibility and transparency for both  partner shops and the public. Achieving SOC 2 Type II compliance demonstrates that Tekmetric not only meets, but surpasses industry standards. We are committed to consistently measuring up on behalf of our customers, and data security is no exception to that rule.

By combining our leading shop management solution with top-class data security, we can better support you and your shop in protecting your data and your customers’ data – all without slowing your team down. Here’s to transparency, trust and reliability!

You’re looking for the right tool for your shop: something that can manage your shop's workflow efficiently, free you up to spend your time on important shop decisions, and grow your bottom line.

How do you know if a system is designed to grow your business? At the very least, it must measure your business. If a shop management system cannot accurately measure shop performance, it can’t tell you whether or not using that system has improved your business.

Full Speed Ahead in 2024: A Q1 Recap

As we progress further into the new quarter, it’s important to take stock of the strides Tekmetric has made, as well as build the momentum to continue providing top-notch service and innovative solutions. From launching groundbreaking new features and building deeper connections in the industry, Tekmetric has kept our foot on the gas in the first quarter of 2024 to measure up – in every way we can.

Supporting Shops with Innovative Updates and Features

At Tekmetric, it’s important for us to provide solutions that are relevant to your shop’s needs. Over the last quarter, we focused our efforts on providing updates and features that you have requested based on what you’re seeing in the field. Whether partnering with another industry powerhouse or helping strengthen reporting capabilities, we launched solutions that help your shop operate more effectively and grow your bottom line.

Sometimes two is better than one – and Tekmetric aims to integrate with a variety of industry solutions so you can access a wealth of information in our comprehensive system. For example, earlier this year we partnered with Advance Auto Parts to integrate MotoVisuals, a cloud-based library designed to provide easy-to-understand overviews of repairs to customers. We accompanied this new integration with a webinar led by Tekmetric’s very own P.J. Leslie and David Lyddall, director of MotoVisuals for Advance Auto Parts. Both speakers discussed their commitment to helping create an excellent customer experience and build customer satisfaction through this solution. The MotoVisuals integration is just one example of how we can continue to measure up together.

In addition to integrations, we also added new reports and features designed to make your life easier and help your shop run more efficiently. For example, the Multi-Shop Report offers a comprehensive breakdown of payments across all locations, empowering owners to make informed comparisons and strategic decisions. Additionally, the Labor Sales Report was created to provide details of labor sales when looking at employee pay, providing an additional option to accompany the information available in our Tech Report. Finally, our Itemized Tire Tax feature helps ensure that tire shops can provide clear and itemized tax information according to state legislation.

We also recognize the importance of community in the auto repair industry. As we move forward with the industry’s top trends and new product features, we have continued to invest in building connections and stronger relationships with both industry partners and you – our partner shops.

Building Deeper Connections in the Industry

At Tekmetric, we believe in the importance of long-term investments, whether that is in the product we provide, the people we hire or industry trends that we partake in. Our connection to our customers and desire to serve shop owners drives our day-to-day and motivates us to continue striving for excellence.

One of the ways in which we prioritize connection is through the various events we attend year-round across the country. This allows us to have conversations and build deeper relationships with you – the shops that we serve. Additionally, it gives us a chance to discuss what you’re seeing in the field, as well as what features, products and services you need to succeed. These conversations drive our product innovation process, allowing us to continue providing solutions that support your shop’s growth and forward momentum.

At the VISION Hi-Tech Training & Expo 2024, P.J. Leslie, Head of Business Development, was featured on the Kaizen CPAs + Advisors podcast where he gave insight on using Tekmetric’s numbers to continue enhancing the customer experience. Additionally, in March, we sprang forward, with our clocks and innovations, to the Automotive Training Institute (ATI) Super Conference in Grapevine, Texas from March 13-16. At each event, our conversations with shop owners and technicians brought the need for streamlined processes and enhanced customer communication to the forefront. Both needs are priorities that Tekmetric will continue to build on in each quarter of 2024.

In addition to attending events, Tekmetric also aims to support our shop owners in sharing their own insights and lessons about measuring up in today’s industry. For example, this quarter Brian Jesko, the owner of Trinity Auto Haus, joined us for a webinar, “From Technician to Multi-Shop Owner,” where he shared his journey of scaling his local shop and generating countless 5-star Google reviews to attract more business. One of the biggest takeaways from his webinar is the importance of holding a competitive advantage in service experience as opposed to solely relying on competitive pricing.

Continuing Our Forward Motion to Provide Great Solutions

Tekmetric’s product innovation and strong industry connections have paved the way for us to continue our forward motion into 2024 and beyond. This ongoing progress was recently recognized by G2, as they honored Tekmetric with the title of Top-Notch Auto Repair Software for the third year in a row. Talk about a three-peat! Receiving this award three years in a row is an incredible honor and a testament to both our team’s commitment to providing the solutions you need, and the support and feedback we received from you – our shop owners. However, our work does not stop at this recognition. In fact, we are more motivated than ever to continue bringing valuable solutions to meet your needs as we progress through 2024.

As we entered the year, we took a close look at the upcoming trends to set ourselves up for success while also providing valuable insights to the rest of the industry. After all, we’re all in this together. You may have seen some of these insights from our CEO and Founder, Sunil Patel, in his guest article, “Leveraging emerging industry trends in 2024,” with Vehicle Service Pros discussing 2024 industry trends. As a former shop owner himself, Sunil has a deep understanding of how to use industry trends to your shop’s advantage, and his article includes actionable advice on how to apply growth-oriented strategies, maximize value with efficient data use and meet customer needs with modern solutions – all while remaining poised for growth.

Measuring Up with Tekmetric in 2024

As we continue into Q2 and beyond, Tekmetric aims to continue our momentum, looking ahead to the next solutions we can provide that support your goals as shop owners. We want to be a team that plays our A-game each quarter, and we are excited to continue working with you to take your business to the next level. Cheers to a great first quarter at Tekmetric!

Accelerating into an Innovative 2024 with Customer Focus and Inspired Teams

We brought our entire team together in person to kick off the year in Houston, and to say I was anything short of blown away would be an understatement.

We pride ourselves on being a remote-first company and we’ll continue to build our team remotely with the best talent from across the world, but there sure was something special about having everyone in person at the same time, in the same place, uniting around the same goals.

When you have the opportunity to gather such an amazingly talented group in the same room, you’ll be surprised by what happens from the brainstorming, to the tactical collaboration – and well, all the fun we had together!

And this wasn’t all just about us. Because in the end, we’re here to support all the amazing independent auto repair shops that do great work every day getting cars back on the road.

Tekmetric's Dedication to Customer Obsession

A dozen of our customer shops were gracious enough to host folks across our teams as we spent time with shop owners, advisors, and technicians diving into the next batches of innovation the industry needs us to build into Tekmetric.

Running a repair shop is the background of everything we do. It's that partnership between Tekmetric and the auto repair shops that leverage the platform daily that enables us to build the absolute best tool for the job: running an independent auto repair shop.

As we continue to build Tekmetric, I’m especially keen to hear more than ever from technicians on this front.

At a time when industry continues to fight to keep up with challenges in educating, recruiting, and retaining top-quality techs, we’re taking a more intentional stance on the role a shop management system can play in helping your shop build and support the best team possible. Be sure to look for more from us throughout the year in this area.

We’ve always started anything we do at Tekmetric with a ‘customer obsession’ mindset – and I’m proud to extend this further down to the technician level this year.

As we grow, I’m also noticing how important it is to spend more of my time transferring real-world shop knowledge to every member of our team. In the early days, our Tekmetric office was the upper level of my shop, and I probably took for granted how easy it was for our team to observe the activities going on downstairs.

It's rejuvenating to now bring over 100 of our teammates to shops and immerse ourselves in the challenges our customers are facing. I smile when I see a well-drawn whiteboard with jobs listed out in columns, color-coded and sorted by promise time.

I think back on the early ideas that went into translating age-old management concepts into better versions of what are now standard features in Tekmetric.

I get even more joy when one of our new product managers builds well past my ideas, or I hear one of our onboarding managers asking a shop owner a question that even I’m not sure I would have thought of.

One thing is certain: the opportunity for our team to connect, collaborate, and brainstorm our next steps as a shop management system has ignited our drive for success.

Driving for Success in 2024

We are growing and maturing in real-time, and the pace of our new thinking and new innovation is mind-blowing.

If you’re a current customer, our doors are always open. Feedback from front-line employees, technicians, service writers, general managers, and of course shop owners, has turned into some of our most powerful features and functionality.

If you want to connect with our team, we welcome you to email us at support@tekmetric.com to set up a time with our product team to discuss ways we can improve, or set up a 1:1 consultation if you need additional support.

And if you haven’t made the switch to Tekmetric yet, what are you waiting for? Book some time with one of our Shop Advisors here to talk through how we might be able to help your shop run better than it ever has.

From our team to yours – thanks for your continued trust and support as we grow Tekmetric. 2024 figures to be a great year for us and for the industry. If there’s anything I can personally do to help your shop measure up to another level, please reach out!
